Spring Capsule Wardrobe | Outfit 07

My mom, sister, and I went to Wicked last week and the show was amazing. The story ties into The Wizard of Oz with unexpected twists and turns that were just so interesting. I highly recommend seeing Wicked if it plays near you.

Capsule Pieces

May is the last month of my spring capsule wardrobe and it’s been great, but I’m craving change. I have a small list started of what I’m hoping to find for my summer capsule and I’ve started looking online for the pieces. This capsule wardrobe process has made me very picky and strategic with my shopping. I can already tell it’s a better use of my money to not settle on a piece that almost fits the bill.

Capsule Staples | My Favorite Hat

One thing I’ve learned throughout this capsule wardrobe process is that a good hat can make a big difference in an outfit.

See for yourself:

It just pulls the outfit together don’t you think? I always thought you had to buy a new statement necklace or purse to freshen up an outfit. Nope. A hat is where it’s at.

The hat I’m wearing is Nine West brand from DSW. I can’t find the exact one online (I bought it last fall), but if you’re in the market for a new hat check out Gigi Pip. Their hats are adorable.

Spring Capsule Wardrobe | Reshuffle

I’m doing a capsule wardrobe reshuffle. Yes, I made this up, but hear me out.

When I put together my spring capsule I was after versatility so I chose mostly basics that I felt comfortable in. It turns out a closet full of comfortable basics doesn’t translate to confidence in your style or wardrobe. So with one month left, I’m opting for a reshuffle.

Say hello to the new additions:

And adios to what’s leaving:

Also, why did I add two dresses that (a) I don’t like wearing and (b) aren’t even spring colors?! What was I thinking? I don’t feel comfortable in either of them — one is too short with sleeves which should never be a combo because if you raise your arm the whole thing moves up. And the other dress is too plain and formal. So, rather than forcing it, I’ve accepted that if I don’t feel totally comfortable, confident, or myself in something then I’m tossing it aside.

I’m so glad I started this project because I wouldn’t have learned these things without forcing myself to take a closer look at my closet through a capsule wardrobe. It’s only been two months and I already feel like I understand my style better and see the gaps I need to fill for my next capsule.

Out with the old, in with the favorites. Nothing more, nothing less.

I often read fashion magazines as a kid. I would snatch last month’s Allure from my sister’s bedroom and take it to my closet where I had a make-shift reading nook. It consisted of an embroidered pillow and a tap-it light I convinced my mom to order me off an infomercial.

Whenever I got a magazine I read every single word — advertisements and all — starting with page 1. I studied it. I can’t remember what I was looking for but my preteen self was mesmerized. I contemplated if I was girly, sporty, edgy, or classic. I really thought you had to define your style using those finite options. I guess I didn’t understand that magazines were merely suggestions meant for you to flip and browse.

This got me thinking, what would I call my style now if I put it in a box? I’m really not sure. Defining my personal style is part of the reason why I started a capsule wardrobe. I think having a grasp on your own style helps you detach from trends and wash away the itch to shop. I hope by the end of it I can describe my style, at least in some ways, as intentional.

35-Piece Spring Capsule Wardrobe

There it is — my Spring 2017 Capsule Wardrobe! It’s filled with basics and a lot of layering pieces, because you never know what to expect from March-May in Minnesota. I have 2 tank tops, 6 short sleeves, 5 long sleeves, 2 sweaters, 4 cardigans/top layers, 2 dresses, 2 skirts, 5 pairs of pants, 2 flats, 1 pair of heels, 2 sneakers, and 2 booties. Whew!

It’s so helpful to see my clothes together like this. I can already guess which pieces I’m going to wear the most and which I’m going to wear the least (ahem… dresses.) I’m most excited about all the layer combinations I can make. I think that white cardigan (which I didn’t know I would even like at the time of purchase) is going to be my most versatile piece.

My main colors for this capsule are white, blue, and charcoal/black. Blush and cognac are my accent colors. Some shirts seem a little dark for Spring, but that’s why I threw in white jeans.

I hope you enjoyed seeing my spring capsule wardrobe! I’ll be posting about my capsule on Tuesdays and Thursdays sharing outfits as well as what I’m learning through the process.

This outfit is so care-free that Sunday afternoon felt a little like vacation. It’s also a compilation of my favorite comfort clothes — Patagonia sweater, worn-in jeans, Birkenstocks. Speaking of, are Birkenstocks and socks cool? The jury is still out, but I did leave my house like this.

Having a capsule wardrobe is fun so far. I’m already learning what I like to wear and it’s turning out to be pretty basic. The no shopping thing has been fine other than I’m dying to buy a new rain coat for my Europe trip coming up in two weeks. Stay strong Kimberly. Emergency ponchos are cute, too.

This outfit is simple — just jeans and a t-shirt. My hat makes it extra cool and slightly hipster. I’m into it.

We had breakfast at my favorite brunch spot in Minneapolis — Modern Times Cafe. They have a bunch of vegan options including a Mexican breakfast burrito that’s so good. Even my non-vegan boyfriend loves it!
